Osaka to Hiroshima tickets for the trip you are actually taking
THE THREE DECISIONS FIRST
Which tickets should you check?
- Same-day return
- Two discounted one-day tickets overlap. Compare a five-day pass with one discounted ticket plus a standard ticket for your actual date.
- Overnight, on separate dates
- Two eligible ¥7,900 tickets total ¥15,800 before fees and extra travel. The five-day pass is ¥17,000.
- Hiroshima + Miyajima
- Add both local rail directions, the JR ferry and visitor tax. With the explicit ¥420 rail reference and no seller fees, the two totals differ by just ¥40; confirm your actual fares.

Put your dates into the comparison →A Hiroshima side trip does not automatically make a rail pass the best buy. Your departure date, return date and local journeys can change the answer. Start with those decisions, then compare the tickets that cover them.
For this guide, the comparison is for one adult in ordinary class, traveling from Osaka or Shin-Osaka to Hiroshima. Miyajima can be added as a separate excursion from Hiroshima Station. Other journeys, accommodation and attraction admission need their own budget.
Put the dates on the journey first
Write down the day you leave Osaka and the day you return. If you are continuing elsewhere, compare a one-way journey and the onward tickets you need. A return to Osaka is only part of the budget if you actually plan to take it.
JR-West's Kansai-Hiroshima Area Pass costs ¥17,000 for five consecutive calendar days. If it starts on 7 October, its five-day window runs through 11 October. It is not a five-journey allowance, and activating it late in the day does not create five rolling 24-hour periods. Only count a journey as covered when its date, route and train fit the product's conditions. JR-West pass details
A return on the sixth calendar day needs another ticket. For example, a pass beginning on 7 October ends on 11 October; a return on 12 October is outside its validity. Compare that extra return ticket with buying separate tickets for the whole side trip. Moving the activation date also changes which outbound and local rides remain outside.
Include the discounted one-way option
JR-West lists a ¥7,900 Osaka City–Hiroshima City discounted one-way ticket. Two qualifying tickets for different dates total ¥15,800, before any additional costs. Their one-day validity periods must not overlap; a same-day return cannot automatically use that pair. The product has visitor eligibility and purchase-channel conditions. Official product details, Japanese conditions
For a simple overnight return, that ¥15,800 benchmark is ¥1,200 below the ¥17,000 pass. This is a useful starting point, not a guarantee of what a seller will charge or what you can book. Check whether you qualify, whether the purchase and exchange process fits your trip, and whether seller fees change the amount.
For a same-day return, compare the pass with one discounted ticket plus a separately purchased return, after checking each ticket’s conditions. With an explicitly checked ¥10,750 standard ticket and no added seller fees, that mixed combination is ¥18,650. The two-discounted-ticket total of ¥15,800 is unavailable for that date because the tickets would overlap. The mixed combination is our interpretation of the separate rules, not a package recommended or sold by JR-West.
For the discounted one-way ticket, JR-West requires a passport issued by a foreign government and Temporary Visitor status. It is sold through selected overseas travel agencies with an exchange process in Japan. Check that process before relying on the price, particularly if your trip is already underway. You do not need to enter passport details into this calculator. Eligibility and purchase conditions
If you are unsure about eligibility, select “Not sure” and check your passport and entry status against the official conditions before paying. The restricted-product prices remain conditional. You can also check the standard tickets available for your dates while resolving eligibility.
Make the endpoints match
Osaka and Shin-Osaka are different stations. A city-zone ticket and a station-to-station ticket can also cover different things, even when both are described casually as “Osaka to Hiroshima.”
The discounted product uses Osaka City and Hiroshima City zones. SmartEX references here are for Shin-Osaka–Hiroshima. If you begin at Osaka Station, check the local ride to Shin-Osaka too. That feeder ride is separate from a SmartEX ticket, while an eligible continuous journey on the city-zone ticket can treat the endpoints differently. Compare tickets for the same actual starting point.
A city-zone ticket does not provide unlimited local travel after arrival. Check its participating stations and use conditions if you continue directly beyond Hiroshima Station. Once you finish that ticketed journey, a later excursion needs its own ticket or pass coverage. Miyajimaguchi is outside the Hiroshima City zone shown on the official map.
Add Miyajima without hiding the local journeys
From Hiroshima Station, take local rail to Miyajimaguchi and then the JR ferry to Miyajima. Those are separate journeys. When both fit the regional pass’s dates and coverage, they can change the comparison. The Miyajima visitor tax remains separate. If you choose another ferry operator or a direct boat from elsewhere in the city, check that operator’s fare and coverage. Pass coverage, JR ferry fares and tax
There is an important limit to the current comparison: the local rail fare must be confirmed. The operator’s route planner returned a ¥420 adult one-way Hiroshima–Miyajimaguchi reference when checked on 6 October 2026. This reference is available only when you explicitly choose it in the calculator; it is not a seller quotation for your trip. Enter confirmed fares for both directions, use the clearly labelled reference, or leave the total incomplete. JR-West route and fare planner An empty fare is not a free ride.
Add the local journeys you actually want to take, then compare the resulting totals. A pass is more useful when its included journeys match the visit you want. If you already own a relevant pass, check what it covers and the additional tickets still needed; its already-paid price is not a new expense for this decision.
Treat reference fares as references
The operator-linked SmartEX tables give a regular-season ordinary reserved Nozomi/Mizuho reference of ¥10,750 between Shin-Osaka and Hiroshima, and an ordinary nonreserved reference of ¥9,890. Those amounts describe particular products and conditions. They are not verified walk-up fares or exact quotations for every travel date. Check seat rules as well as price. The 2026 all-reserved Nozomi calendar includes 10–12 October and 21–23 November, among other periods. On an all-reserved date, choose reserved Nozomi seating or check a different suitable service. The nonreserved reference does not establish an available Nozomi seat. A ticket or pass also does not guarantee that your preferred departure has an available seat. JR-West's 2026 announcement
Leave with a purchase plan
Before paying, keep a list of the ticket for each dated journey, the extra costs and the remaining checks. Check the seller's total, collection or exchange process, seat reservations and refund conditions. For a pass, save the activation date. For separate tickets, save each direction and use date.
Use the Hiroshima comparison for this bounded side trip. If your decision also includes Tokyo, several other regions or an existing nationwide pass, return to the nationwide calculator and compare the full itinerary. The right result is the lower-cost suitable option among the choices actually checked, with the assumptions still visible.
